NAME

OCTAVE cafwd3.m - Perform Kelvin-Voigt forward computation given stiffness and damping values

SYNOPSIS

cafwd3 prompts for:

Choose to compute with observed data for comparison or not (GUI Click Box)
IF WITHOUT DATA
User enters stiffness, C1 (m^2/s^2), and damping, C2 (m^2/s) (GUI Entry Box)
LOOPS for additional parameter choices and computes plots
of phase velocity (m/s), decay (1/m), and Q (unitless) vs frequency.
ELSE
Assuming bvas.his and bamp.his are available (from bvas and bamp runs)
Prompts for 2 mouse clicks selecting a frequency range (low to high frequency)
This permits an estimate for initial C1 and C2 from the data. (GUI Entry Box)
LOOPS for additional parameter choices and computes plots
of phase velocity (m/s), decay (1/m), and Q (unitless) vs frequency.

DESCRIPTION

Basic Seismic Utilities (BSU) program run in Octave or Matlab. Within an octave session, type cafwd3 and a GUI pops up as shown above. One either computes the forward problem, displayed against results from a down-hole survey (requires two files, bvas.his and bamp.his), or just computes the forward problem with no data comparisons. This computation is in the context of dispersive body waves (transmission measurement) under the Kelvin-Voigt representation.
